guide to natural deodorants that really work

Your guide to natural deodorants that actually work

You have choices when it comes to buying natural deodorant. Too many, frankly. So, how do you know what to look for? What brand is best? And how do you know which deodorant is right for you?

There's no perfect natural deodorant. That's because each of our needs are different. Do you need a heavy-duty deodorant for working out? Do you prefer floral scents? Do you sweat a lot? Do you get BO? We’re here to help you find the right deodorant, depending on YOUR personal needs.

But, first. There are lots of ways to define "best".  But here is what customers have told us they are looking for in a natural deodorant.

1. Safe ingredients. Aluminum free and no harsh chemicals.

2. Odor control

3. Moisture control

4. Lasts all day

A deodorant needs to control odor. And, everybody worries natural deodorants won't work. When picking a natural deodorant - it helps to understand what causes body odor in the first place.

Like sweat, body odor is natural and normal. It is caused when sweat mixes with the microscopic bacteria, which live naturally on our skin. The bacteria can multiply quickly causing the dreaded funky smell we all want to avoid.

The problem with most natural deodorants is they do a poor job neutralizing this odor causing bacteria. They either don't work at all and you smell like you haven't showered in a week or, just as frustrating, they fail at some point during the day.

Here is our guide to the best natural deodorants, tried and tested by myself and other staff. These deodorants truly work at neutralizing odor. Only a few of the brands we have tried have made the cut and onto our store shelves. Scroll down to see our favorites for women, men and anyone with sensitive skin. All of our natural deodorants are also safe for kids.

What's wrong with regular deodorant and anti-perspirant?

I stopped using antiperspirants years ago when I learnt that the ingredients used in antiperspirants (and conventional deodorant) were potentially hazardous. (More on that below.)

But, I also believe our bodies work best when we allow them to do their jobs unhindered. In the case of deodorant, we tend to forget about our armpits and the hard work they do. Home to hundreds of sweat glands – sweating is a natural and essential body process. We sweat to help control our body temperature, eliminate toxins and support a healthy immune system. By stopping us from sweating – anti-perspirants interfere with our bodies ability to do these essential functions.

But, are they safe?

Aluminium is the common active ingredient in antiperspirants. It is used to block your sweat glands and reduce how much sweat you release. It can also alter your skin microbiome. Conventional deodorants and anti-perspirants may also contain phthalates, propylene glycol and parabens.

Unfortunately, studies connecting antiperspirants and deodorants to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s have been limited and results of the few studies available are inconclusive. It is unclear whether or not aluminum in antiperspirants increases your risk of breast cancer or contributes to other health issues.

Natural health advocates err on the side of caution and advocate using natural products.  While other professionals believe – in the absence of any conclusive evidence to support these claims – there is no need to avoid using these products.

That said, I believe using a natural deodorant that is free of all of these chemicals is likely a safer bet, especially when there are natural deodorants that work really well.

switching to a natural deodorant

When making the switch to a natural deodorant there are a couple of things you should understand.

First, you will have to make peace with a little perspiration.

Although most natural deodorants contain a mix of odor controlling and sweat absorbing ingredients - they will not stop you from sweating. This is a good thing!

Second, most natural deodorants use a blend of baking soda, coconut oil and anti-bacterial essential oils to neutralize bacteria. Some blends just work better than others.

Third, don't be afraid to use your anti-perspirant (occasionally). Yes I said it. There are special occasions when we just don't want to sweat. Just try and replace your anti-perspirant on regular days to allow your body to work properly and avoid potentially harmful chemicals.

Bizarre Fact: If you have dry earwax (as opposed to wet & sticky) you might not need any deodorant. Turns out you might be missing the gene which causes sweating and BO. Apparently a small change in a gene know as ABCC11 is connected to both underarm odor production and whether or not a person as wet or dry earwax.1

Best natural deodorant for women

Black Chicken Remedies Axilla Deodorant Paste

When you need a reliable natural deodorant, day in and day out, Axilla has you covered. This award winning deodorant has a cult following for good reason. Axilla natural deodorant is a brilliant blend of pure essential oils and botanical extracts which target and effectively neutralize odor and absorb sweat – all without harmful chemicals or sweat blockers.

It’s suitable for virtually all skin types, and (unlike most conventional deodorants), it’s completely invisible and rapidly absorbed once it’s applied. No stains. There is no need to re-apply Axilla Deodorant Paste during the day, even if heading to the gym. Seriously!

PATRICIAS THOUGHTS: I love Black Chicken deodorant. This is one of the first I tried, and I still believe it is one of the best.  I personally rely on Axilla when I am out as it really does neutralize odor and last all day.  It is also really good at absorbing sweat. Axilla is the best one to try if you typically have BO and don’t want to mess around testing natural deodorants. If you're one of those lucky people that just doesn't get very smelly – you will probably be fine with one of the other deodorants on this list.

* Please note, there's a small percentage of people who may react to baking soda in Black Chicken. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend trying the baking soda free version – Axilla Barrier Booster.

Chic packaging and a stick that won't crumble. Salt & Stone's Lavender & Sage Natural deodorant for women is a perfect swap for those who prefer a floral scent.

Antimicrobial ingredients like lavender, rosemary and sage fight odor-causing bacteria, while arrowroot powder helps absorb wetness. Shea butter, jojoba oil and coconut oil soothe and hydrate skin. It glides on smoothly – no residue or staining.

Lightly scented with lavender, this is a great natural deodorant for women and teen girls.

PATRICIAS THOUGHTS: This is a great option for women who prefer a solid cream stick deodorant. It is super easy to apply and performs well though it is not as strong as Axilla. It is lightly scented with lavender so it’s perfect for those who prefer a more floral scent.

Best natural deodorant for men

This award winning natural deodorant is as strong as it gets with an earthy unisex scent. Axilla is a deodorant cream paste made with shea butter, coconut oil, kaolin clay and pure essential oils to target and effectively neutralize odor and absorb sweat.

This is a favorite among our male customers.

PATRICIAS THOUGHTS: Admittedly, it might take a little time to get used to using a paste. Apply it the same way you would moisturizer – massage a pea size amount into your armpit. The paste softens and absorbs easily, and can still be applied to unshaved armpits.

* Please note, there's a small percentage of people who may react to baking soda in Black Chicken. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend trying the baking soda free version – Axilla Barrier Booster.

Best natural deodorant for sensitive skin & kids

If you have sensitive skin, you already know a lot of products can cause irritation, and deodorants with baking soda can be a major offender.

It may take some trial and error before you find the best deodorant for your sensitive skin, but these 2 gentle natural deodorants are baking soda a free and a great place to start.

I also recommend starting with a sensitive skin formula if your child is new to using deodorant to minimize any chance of irritation. However, if your child has BO - they can safely try a formula with baking soda. Just be sure to watch for any irritation.

Black Chicken Remedies Barrier Booster deodorant for sensitive skin

Designed for sensitive skin – Barrier Booster uses gentle natural ingredients to neutralize odor, absorb moisture and replenish skin tissue.

Naturally anti-bacterial ingredients like coconut oil and magnesium hydroxide control odor while Diatomaceous Earth and candelilla wax provide a breathable layer helping prevent irritation. It’s rich in lipids and fatty acids (essential for healthy cells) that actually strengthen your sensitive skin.

PATRICIAS THOUGHTS: This is a great option for anyone who has a reaction to baking soda in natural deodorants. It is super easy to use and performs almost as well as the original strength formula.
