If you have sensitive skin— or tend to have reactions to skin care products in general— choosing products that minimize irritation is key to managing sensitivity. And, products specifically formulated for sensitive skin can be a good place to start.
But what if that is not enough? Even sensitive skin products can contain ingredients— like essential oils, fragrance and preservatives— that can irritate your delicate skin.
While we've covered what causes sensitive skin and how to build a better skin care routine in another post, this article highlights 7 customer favorites.
These extra gentle formulas are made with minimal ingredients and free from common irritants —including alcohol, synthetic fragrances, phenoxyethanol, sulfates and essential oils. So, if your skin feels extra irritated these soothing skin care products are worth a try.
Please note that individual allergic reactions are always a possibility, so we recommend patch testing if you are concerned about the way a product might react with your skin.

3 Skin Care Products To Avoid (for now) if You Have Sensitive Skin
1. Vitamin C Serum
Although Vitamin C is one of the most effective skincare ingredients for brighter skin – it can cause irritation and reactivity in sensitive skin types. If you want to add a vitamin C serum to your skin care routine, start slowly! Try a serum with Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD ascorbate) which is generally considered to be less irritating than some other forms (like ascorbic acid).
2. Chemical Based Sunscreen
Avoid chemical sunscreens with ingredients like avobenzone, octinoxate, and oxybenzone. While effective, these chemical filters can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially in people with sensitive skin. Instead, opt for mineral sunscreen with ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Mineral sunscreen tends to be less irritating and more soothing for sensitive skin compared to chemical sunscreens.
3. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)
AHAs work by exfolating the outer layer of skin which can disrupt the skin's natural barrier leading to irritation, redness, or dryness. Because individuals with sensitive skin have an easily compromised barrier, skin can react more strongly to this type of exfoliation.
